《水星领航员》改编自漫画家天野梢的同名漫画。背景设定在未来，彼时人类已将火星改造成九成被海水覆盖的宜居星球，并在星球上以水都威尼斯为范本建造了城市新威尼斯。作品讲述在新威尼斯驾驶小船带观光客游览城市的领航员们，一起工作、生活及与人邂逅的温情故事。
由于雅典娜声优川上伦子已于2011年去世，新作中雅典娜将由“炮姐”声优佐藤利奈配音。此前影片计划于今年冬季上映，受疫情影响推迟至2021年春季。
